Pune, India

Sterlite Tech won the Jury Commendation Award at the 16th FICCI CSR Awards for large-scale impact in water management in drought-hit Aurangabad region. It’s Project Jaldoot has resulted in a 150 per cent increase in Aurangabad’s water-storage capacity.

Along with its global leadership in designing, building, and managing web-scale networks, Sterlite Tech has been actively contributing to improving the lives of people in the communities they serve.

Historically, the Aurangabad region has been drought prone. Identifying this as a socio-economic challenge, Sterlite Tech launched Project Jaldoot and constructed 22 check dams in 16 villages between 2006 and 2011. For long-term impact, the company introduced innovative construction techniques to increase longevity of the dam structures, encouraged community ownership, and generated awareness around water management, among others initiatives.

Between 2016 – 2017, Project Jaldoot resulted in an increase of 644,000 cubic metre of groundwater in eight villages, directly benefitting 14,000 villagers. The project has resulted in over 6,000 villagers accessing clean drinking water. With 150 per cent increase in the water-storage capacity and 20 per cent increase in the average incomes in these villages, Project Jaldoot has brought transformational changes in the everyday living experiences for the people living in Aurangabad, while ensuring security of livelihoods and economic growth of the villagers in the region.

Presented by Shri PP Chaudhary, Minister of State for Corporate Affairs, Law & Justice, the award recognises companies in integrating and internalising corporate social responsibility. Highlighting the transformative change that Project Jaldoot has had on the lives of the people of the region, KS Rao, COO and Managing Director, Sterlite Tech, said, “As a responsible corporate citizen, Sterlite Tech strongly believes in contributing towards high-impact sustainable development of the community. We initiated Project Jaldoot to ensure ground-water recharging and sustainable water conservation. The project also aimed at inculcating a strong sense of ownership among the villagers to sustainably consume natural resources, thereby preventing drought conditions.”
