– The honour recognises Sterlite Tech’s transformative efforts to create shared value in e-education, healthcare, women empowerment and environment management
Sterlite Tech [BSE: 532374, NSE: STRTECH], a global leader in smarter digital network solutions, won the prestigious CII-ITC Sustainability Awards 2017 for Excellence in Corporate Social Responsibility. India’s only third-party honour, the award process measures performance and provides detailed feedback for opportunities to excel.
The award was presented to Manish Sinha, CMO, Sterlite Tech by Shri C K Mishra, Secretary, Ministry of Environment, Government of India, at a glittering awards function held in New Delhi on December 12. Citing the honour, Dr. Anand Agarwal, CEO, Sterlite Tech, said, “Along with our global leadership in designing, building and managing web-scale digital networks, we have been actively contributing towards improving the lives of the communities we function in, thus creating shared value for all. In alignment with our vision to transform everyday living by delivering smarter networks, this recognition solidifies our commitment to the holistic growth of the society and the creation of sustainable environment in the regions we operate.”
Sterlite Tech’s CSR initiatives are based on UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, and have resulted in the four pillars of community, people, environment and conduct. These are also the drivers for the company’s key projects in e-education, healthcare, women empowerment and environment management.
e-education: To transform learning experiences, Sterlite School Tech launched the Virtual Classrooms project, a technology investment to change India’s education landscape. The program focuses on providing quality education to students from lower income families – creating equal growth opportunities, and nullifying the effects of unavailability of qualified teachers. Started in 2013, this project has reached more than 1,72,000 children in 480 Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai schools.
Healthcare: Focusing on the need for primary healthcare services for Dadra & Nagar Haveli’s tribal population, Sterlite Tech initiated its Mobile Medical Unit programme, in partnership with Indian Red Cross Society in 2006. Under the programme, the company provides free health check-ups to 24 villages, site visits by doctors and a mobile dispensary serving more than 2 lakh patients. This programme has brought a noticeable change in the health and general well-being of the villagers in the region.
Women Empowerment: In alignment with the Government of India’s Skill India Mission, Sterlite Tech Foundation set up the Jeewan Jyoti Women Empowerment Institute in 2014 at Ambavane, near Pune. With technical education gaining importance due to increasing demand for skilled and semi-skilled resources, Jeewan Jyoti conducts vocational trainings on nursing, computer operations, data entry, tailoring, fashion designing and basic beauty culture. The Institute has improved the socio-economic status of the women from 93 villages in the Pune region till date.
Environment management: Identifying Aurangabad’s drought condition as a socio-economic challenge, the company constructed 22 check dams in 16 villages since 2006. Between 2016 – 2017, Project Jaldoot resulted in an increase of 644,000 cubic metre of groundwater in 8 villages, benefitting 14,000 villagers. The project led to over 6,000 villagers accessing clean drinking water. With 150% increase in the water-storage capacity and 20% increase in the average incomes, Project Jaldoot has brought transformational changes in the everyday living experiences of the people in the region. Sterlite Tech has been recently honoured with the Jury Commendation Award at the 16th FICCI CSR Awards for this large-scale impact in water management.
In another initiative, Sterlite Tech proactively launched the Project Green Belt – planting 5,000 trees on both sides of the 2-km road to MIDC, Waluj, mitigating the effects of industrialisation in Aurangabad. Sterlite Tech also took up Gram Samruddhi initiative. The company adopted Village Pophla and transformed it into a model village through various community development measures.
