Summary

Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is organizing a workshop on “Advances in Optical Communications (AOC)” through IIT Madras at IITM Research Park, IIT Madras, Chennai on 22nd and 23rd July, 2023. This workshop aims to explore emerging and future technologies in the field of optical communications, providing an excellent platform for participants to gain knowledge about the latest advancements.

The workshop will comprise of Plenary Talk, Invited Talks, Panel discussions and exhibitions from the industry.

Dr. Badri Gomatam

Group Chief Technology Officer

A photonics expert, Badri leads core research in optical communications products and network solutions. With a view on emerging network technologies, Badri guides the Company’s technology vision. Under his leadership, the Company today has over 376 patents to its credit. Badri has an MS and Ph.D. from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and a BS from the Birla Institute of Technology. He joined STL in 2011

Dr. Arvind Kumar Mishra

Head - Application Engineering, R&D, STL

Dr. Arvind Kumar Mishra is working with Sterlite Technologies Limited as Associate General Manager. He has received M. Sc. and M. Tech. degrees from IIT Delhi and PhD degree from University College Cork (UCC), Ireland. He possesses 20+ years of advance research experience and driving cutting edge research on Multi-Tera-scale transport systems for NLD/Metro, GPON/NG-PON Access Networks, Fiber Optic Sensor Technologies and Systems for Security & Smart Infrastructure. Prior to 2012, he worked 12 years in Europe (Netherlands, Ireland, Greece & Germany). He has published over 65 articles in peer reviewed International Journals and Conferences. He had served as President, Vice-President and Board of Directors at FTTH Council Asia-Pacific.

Sudipta Bhaumik

Head- Applications and Standards Engineering

Sudipta Bhaumik is Head- Applications and Standards Engineering at STL. He has been in the telecommunication field for over 25 years and engaged in research into quality, reliability, and application issues of optical fiber and cable. He was one of the architects of quality, process, and application engineering of STL’s state-of-the-art optical fibre and cable manufacturing plants.  He is an active expert member in telecom standard development organizations and serving as Vice Chair of ITU-T Study Group 15, Working Party 2 of SG15, Project Leader of IEC SC86A (Optical Fibre and Cable) and Liaison officer of IEC TC 86 (Fibre Optics). Sudipta is one of the founder members and master trainers of STL Academy. He is one of the Guinness World Record holders to achieve the most viewers of a live telecommunication lesson. A frequent author of technical papers, he twice won the Urbain J.H. Malo Award for most meritorious research paper in Wire Association International (WAI)’s convention. He was the first Indian to receive the prestigious IEC 1906 award from IEC TC86 Fibre Optics. Sudipta holds a M.Tech degree in ceramic engineering from Indian Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University.

Vaibhav Khanna

Head of Intellectual Property

As the Head of Intellectual Property (IP) at STL, Vaibhav Khanna spearheads the development and implementation of the company’s IP strategy and management. His leadership has resulted in an eightfold increase in STL’s patent portfolio to over 650+ patents. He has been instrumental in integrating IP into the company’s overall business strategy. He has contributed to STL’s entry into overseas markets by developing robust IP risk management practices and deterrent capabilities. His contributions are instrumental in propelling STL’s growth.
